A day trip to Oxford began with a guided tour from the curators at the Weston Library, which is part of the University of Oxford's Bodleian Libraries . The newly opened building was designed around housing their special collections of rare books, manuscripts, and archives. Highlights from their collection were showcased in an on-site exhibition, which included many ornate manuscripts and a complete copy of the Gutenberg Bible (the third I've seen in person).
After lunch at the old stomping ground for the Inklings writers' group, Eagle and Child. we met with the keeper of The Museum of the History of Science. The original site of the Ashmolean Museum, a comprehensive collection of early scientific instruments are housed here. I found the most interesting objects were the astrolabes and sun dials because of how with technological advances, we have basically replicated and refined these tools into digital versions today. Yet the original concepts in which these century old instruments were created remain the same, connecting us with our ancestors.
