The Victoria & Albert Museum's collection is dedicated to decorative art and design featuring over 4.5 million objects. Meeting with the photographs, prints and drafts department, some of the highlights from the collection were presented, focusing on digital art. One of the first museums dedicated to this emerging field, they began collecting in 1969. Digital preservation policies were discussed in concern to the longevity of the medium. Often times they are able to acquire the technology associated with the artwork since most are by living artists. They are also dedicated to digitizing their entire collection and making it available in an online database to all.
The afternoon was spent exploring the museum, where I first made my way to the jewelry rooms. Continuing the theme I addressed at the British Museum, I was interested to see how metals were used over time to make these material objects and the importance different cultures put upon them. The themes of birth and fertility, childhood and survival, love and fidelity, beliefs and superstitions, wealth and status as well as death and mourning were all addressed through the idea of jewelry adornment. I also visited the fashion section that chronicled cultural attitude throughout the decades.
